Graduate quarterback Quinton Williams and senior running back Jarett Hunter played pivotal roles, while senior defensive back Kenny Gallop, Jr. sealed the victory with a game-clinching interception. With just under six minutes left in regulation, Norfolk State took a 23-20 lead with a 36-yard field goal. The Bison's offense, which had struggled earlier in the game, suddenly came alive when it mattered most. Williams orchestrated a 64-yard drive, spanning nine plays and nearly five minutes, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Hunter. The successful conversion put the Bison ahead 27-23 with only 1:17 remaining. Norfolk State didn't give up easily and quickly advanced to the Bison's 41-yard line. With the clock ticking down and no timeouts left, the Spartans were forced into a desperation pass, which Gallop, an All-American safety, intercepted at the Howard one-yard line. This crucial play with just five seconds left on the clock secured the victory for Howard as Williams took a knee to run out the remaining time. Hunter led all rushers with 64 yards on 12 carries, while Williams contributed 42 rushing yards on five carries. Williams also showcased his passing skills, going 14-of-24 for 240 yards. Richie Ilarraza led all receivers with five receptions for 42 yards.
Defensively, Gallop was the standout performer, tallying 11 total tackles (five solos), a tackle for loss, a half sack, and, most importantly, the game-sealing interception at the end.
